BCVC Panel Discussion on Topics Raised in Matthew Desmond's Book, Evicted
Boone County Voices for Change announced its One Book project earlier this summer with the purpose of connecting BCVC members and members of the public through reading and discussing a common book. We chose via Facebook poll, Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City by Matthew Desmond. Winner of the 2017 Pulitzer Prize for nonfiction, Evicted takes us to the poorest neighborhoods of Milwaukee to tell the story of how eviction has become ordinary, especially for single mothers, and how families are forced into shelters, squalid apartments and more dangerous neighborhoods. Baded on years of embedded fieldwork and gathered data, the book transforms our understanding of extreme poverty and economic exploitation while providing fresh ideas for solving a devastating, uniquely American problem. Come join us for a panel discussion on housing scarcity, eviction and poverty and other issues raised in Evicted. The event is free and open to the public, and you are welcome to attend if you have not read the book.
