August Monthly Program - Agile Implementation in Healthcare
"Agile Implementation in Healthcare" (6:30p-8:30pm) Presented by: Dr. Malaz Boustani. MD, MPH, Founding Director and Chief Innovation Officer at the Center for Health Innovation and Implementation Science at Indiana University School of Medicine. Despite the more than $32 billion the National Institutes of Health has invested annually in research, healthcare delivery organizations are not reliably implementing, sustaining or scaling evidence-based solutions. Currently, one in four patients seeking healthcare will receive suboptimal care or actual harm from the existing system. The US healthcare system is in need of significant change, yet change is not happening. To achieve the goal of better care and evidence-based services, healthcare systems need new organizational approaches and frameworks to reflect the complexity of the system. To improve implementation of care based on evidence, Dr. Boustani and his team of innovators and implementation scientists borrowed from Agile software development along with other theories and frameworks to develop the Agile Implementation (AI). AI is an integrated model that provides reproducible and scalable process to localize rapidly, implement and sustain evidence-based services. Agile Implementation includes eight interconnected steps beginning with identifying opportunities and ending with developing minimally standardized operating procedure. The model embraces implementation sprints and ongoing evaluations of solutions. AI has helped to improve care and clinical outcomes in a variety of care settings. Clinicians, scientists, quality improvement advisors and anyone in the healthcare system passionate about change can receive training on AI at the Center for Health Innovation and Implementation Science, part of Indiana University School of Medicine. Key Take-a-Ways: Agile implementation (AI) provides a process to localize rapidly, implement and sustain evidence-based services. The AI model embraces implementation sprints and ongoing evaluations of solutions. Agile implementation is improving care and clinical outcomes in a variety of care settings. About Dr. Malaz Boustani: Dr. Malaz Boustani is a geriatrician, an innovator and an implementation scientist with vast experience in conducting research focused on developing tools, processes and strategies for implementing evidence-based, cost-effective healthcare solutions in the real world. Dr. Boustani is the Director of the Center for Aging Research at the Regenstrief Institute and serves as faculty with the Richard M. Fairbanks School of Public Health. As the Founding Director and Chief Innovation Officer of Center for Health Innovation and Implementation Science (CHIIS) at Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM), Dr. Boustani is passionate about improving patient outcomes, lowering costs and creating better experiences for both patients and clinicians. His specific focus is accommodating the needs of cognitively impaired patients, both in the general population and particularly for those with dementia. He is a vocal and internationally visible advocate for older adults. Over the years through his clinic at Eskenazi Health, he developed Agile Implementation, a proven evidence-based change methodology designed specifically to improve healthcare. In addition to creating Agile Implementation, he has developed the Health Innovation and Implementation Science graduate certificate program, offered through IUSM, to generate change agents passionate about transforming healthcare. He also serves as a mentor to many junior faculty, sharing his enthusiasm for disruptive innovation with a new generation of clinicians and researchers.
