Are We Alone? Discovering New Worlds

Saturday, August 24, 2019, 2:00 AM

Discovering New Worlds - Are We Alone? Since the first exoplanet discovery two decades ago, some 4000 planets have been confirmed to orbit other stars, from Jupiter-like planets to rocky, Earth-sized worlds. On average, each star in our Galaxy hosts one or more planets, and the spaces between the stars have vast numbers of free-floating worlds. We are literally surrounded by planets. Recently, we have discovered 21 new planets and 850 more potential worlds that have yet to be confirmed, all residing within a few dozen light years of the sun and our own solar system. Scientists around the world are analyzing these local exoplanets to determine their properties, including their structure and compositions, and even their weather. We are at the cusp of a profound understanding of the story of planets everywhere, including whether there is life beyond Earth.   Are we alone?  Special Bonus for all who attend:         Exclusive Archive: The Search for Planets Beyond Our Solar System         NASA Exoplanet Exploration Program         NASA Exoplanet Catalog (over 4000 exoplanets)         Goddard Gallery of Exoplanets         Hubble Exoplanet Image Archive         NASA TESS Mission         James Webb Space Telescope and much more...
