New Year’s Eve Ball Drop and Sky Lantern Release-Muncie

Tuesday, January 1, 2013, 4:00 AM

Residents in the Delaware County area prepare to bring in the New
Year during the “Light Up Downtown” finale. Crowds will gather downtown to
participate in the first ever Sky Lantern Release and watch the traditional New
Year’s Eve Ball Drop. Muncie Downtown Development Partnership (MDPP) will
host the event on December 31 from 11 pm‐12:30 at the Canan Commons, 400 block
of South Walnut Street.
The event is free and open to the public. The PhyXtGear Robotics Team will host the
ball drop and MDDP hopes to release 500 Sky Lanterns during the evening and
encourages everyone to stay late and watch fireworks illuminate the sky.
“I am excited about beginning a new tradition downtown,” says Cheryl, event
director. “It is so important to the future of the city and downtown that our children
have positive memories of Muncie experiences from their youth.”
In addition to the events in Canan Commons, select businesses will be open the
night of the event. Families are invited to spend the entire evening downtown
enjoying the festivities. The Artist Within invites families to “Paint Your Own
Potter” from 8 p.m. – 12 a.m. and the Muncie Children’s Museum’s “Winter
Wonderland” will be open until 8 p.m.
MDDP would like to thank Indiana Michigan Power/AEP, Advanced Signs and
Graphics and Muncie PhyXtGear Robotics Team for making this event possible.
